Dentists have always been a dreaded word in our house, and with three small children in drastic need of going for a check-up, it was about time I made a scheduled appointment and didn’t delay any longer.

The thing is that a few years ago I believed it was a good idea to prove to the children that the dentist was not bad. This course of action not surprisingly backfired, as I lay in the chair petrified of the pain that i knew was coming. My basic clean became three fillings and a future root extraction so whether I’ve just had bad luck previously with mean dentists, or I have a very low pain threshold, either one, the dentist wasn’t one of my favourite places either!

So the appointment loomed, and as much as the kids protested and said they would refuse to open their mouths, off we went. Having moved house not too long ago we tried a new dentist which a friend had recommended. I didn’t hold out much hope as past dentists had also been recommended and I always came out feeling like I’d done two rounds with Mike Tyson! But anyhow the appointment was booked and off we went.

As we entered the dentist we were greeted by the very friendly receptionist, who right away focused on putting the kids at ease. She told all of them exactly what the dentist was going to do and pointed to pictures on the wall showing peoples teeth, who didn’t have their regular checkups. The children seemed to relax and suddenly knew, and understood, the significance of daily brushing (if only they would listen to me at home so easily).

One by one they laid in the chair. The dentist was warm and friendly and my youngest kid bonded immediately he began lowering and raising the chair to make him laugh. Even my two daughters were relaxed and yes they even opened their mouths!

A simple clean was performed on all three and a friendly explanation on the importance of cleaning your teeth after . The dentists nurse then gave the children some special tablets that showed the plaque and turned it pink (much to the amusement of the children!) and these continue to be used once or twice a week at home just to make sure their teeth our cleaned properly.

Such a difference a kind, friendly Dental Clinic can make to both a children’s and adults attitude to visiting the dentist. After many years of dreading the six monthly check up, we are now all booked in, as a family, and unbelievably the kids can’t wait!

If your children are fearing the Health & Medical – Dentists then visit 9025 East Mineral Circle Ste 250, Englewood, CO 80112-3469. An excellent service from the minute you walk in for both adults and children alike. Very highly recommended in my house anyway!
