We are what we eat. You have probably heard that saying before and it is completely true. If you eat lots of fatty foods, chances are you will have a high blood pressure. If you eat lots of foods and do not exercise, chances are you are overweight. It goes the same with our teeth. There are many types of foods that have a direct impact on the health of our teeth. Dental experts like Dr. Jonathan Hartley advice the public to be careful with our food choices as these can either make or break our teeth.

When we were still small kids, we were specifically warned by our adults to stay away from eating too much sweets. From candies to cookies, from sodas to shakes, anything that is sweet we were told to be very bad to our teeth. It’s also a funny thing that sweet rhymes perfectly with teeth, but that’s a completely different matter.

To properly maintain our teeth, foremost that we should do is to regularly brush them. While dentists often recommend a twice a day brushing, it is ideal to brush our teeth after every meal. So naturally, since most of us eat three times a day, we need to brush three times too.

The thing is sometimes brushing alone is not enough. We need to add flossing to our arsenal of dental hygiene. But the sad part is that flossing is not something that most of us are fond of doing. We tend to see it as too tasking and time consuming. It’s just not fun to floss. But if we want to have a really clean mouth and teeth, we need to learn how to floss.

But to achieve the best possible dental hygiene, we should add more to our regular brushing and flossing routine. This is to be extra mindful of the foods that we eat. Because anything that we put into our bodies can either keep us healthy or do the opposite. And the teeth are no exception to this. Dr. Jonathan Hartley wants people to understand that there are certain foods that we should be eating more of if what we want is a great looking set of teeth.

The following are some of the foods that we should be eating:

Meats like chicken and others, cheese, plain yogurt (stay away from those sweetened varieties), and fresh vegetables.

When adding vegetables to your diet of teeth-friendly foods, think of carrot and celery.

These are the drinks that we should be drinking more of:

Unsweetened tea, water with fluoride added, and milk. While milk is good, drinking it just when you are about to lie in bed is not a good thing. If you feel that a warm glass of milk is necessary to help you sleep, brush your teeth after you are done drinking your milk.

Sugar is virtually absent in this list of foods and drinks that we need to add to our diet if we want healthy teeth and gums. The reason is because sugar has been known to cause a lot of the common teeth problems like tooth decay.

Dental specialists like Dr. Jonathan Hartley firmly believes that there are three main steps to achieve a healthier set of teeth. One is to brush at least two times a day, two is to floss regularly and lastly, that we should be eating the right kinds of foods.

How do you know if you are maintaining proper daily oral hygiene? A lot of people aren’t, and over 75% of the people in America have either gingivitis, or some other kind of peritonitis. Millions of dollars are spent annually on tooth repair, braces, dentures, and other forms of dental work. There is a constant demand for dentists, so the majority of people in this country must be doing something wrong.

On one hand, bad habits contribute to poor overall daily oral hygiene. One of the major contributors is the consumption of sugary drinks like soda, and even juices contain sugars and other contaminates that are harmful to dental health. Even so called diet drinks contain a certain amount of sugar, as well as other acidic properties that wear away tooth enamel. There are many other drinks that are highly acidic, like oranges, and grapefruit, and coffee is especially harmful. Many people can’t just stop drinking coffee, but they are not buying toothpaste that is appropriate to remove the acid and undo the staining that these kinds of drinks cause. There are other factors and habits that contribute to tooth decay, such as smoking. In order to maintain adequate daily oral hygiene as well as many other health concerns, you should really stop smoking. Not only does smoking stain and darken your teeth, the chemicals in cigarette smoke can cause a number of diseases of the mouth, including cancer, as well as give a smoker very bad breath.

Having a daily oral hygiene properly is just as important to overall dental health. Not only does proper oral routines have to be done right, but it has to start at an early age. Children look to their parents as a role model, and even if you and the teachers at school teach kids about brushing and flossing, if the parents aren’t doing it, their kids will eventually pick up these bad habits as well. Many people don’t brush their teeth correctly, or enough, and the same goes for flossing and brushing the tongue as well.

One of the things about maintaining proper daily oral hygiene is brushing your teeth enough daily. We are all really busy throughout the day, both kids as well as adults. It used to be a rule that you should brush your teeth three times a day, and after snacks or meals. While this is great in the ‘perfect’ world, it just isn’t possible in reality. However, you should be brushing your teeth every morning, and every evening before bed.

It is also a good idea if you can, to rinse your mouth out with some kind of wash after meals, to get any left over food particles out. You need to floss at least once a day, ideally in the evening, when there is the most build up. Two minutes and just the front is not enough to prevent tooth decay. Not only that, but you need to brush your teeth for a longer period of time than most people do. You need to spend at least five minutes, and brush all of your teeth, top, bottom, front and back, as well as your tongue. Get proper Dental Treatment every six months to round out your oral hygiene routine.

Any ethical practitioner of complimentary and alternative medicine will point you to an oral surgeon or an emergency dental clinic when you come in needing emergency dental treatment.
Although complimentary and alternative medicine can help in many areas of physical and emotional health, surgery and dentistry is still best left to conventional medicine. There are some things you can do to wait for your appointment for emergency dental repair.

Stay Calm

The pain you feel when you need emergency dental treatment is sometimes like the feeling of drowning, where in if you panic then you are more likely to sink. Being able to relax during this period of suffering will give you a better chance of survival. By being calm and relaxed you will be able to reduce the panic that usually increases the sensation of pain.

The ability to realx and be calm in extremely stressful situations is something that one needs to learn as this will benefit the individual and this what alternative therapies usually bring to the table. You will still need to get yourself to the emergency dentist and sometimes there isn’t anyone around to help you so learning this ability will avoid you having a traumatic experience.

The Use Of Meditation

One way to calm down is to hold a favorite or lucky object as this gives you better feeling. Another thing to try is meditation, as this can be very helpful for you at the time you need emergency dental treatment so this has to be learned ahead of time even for just a few minutes a day. It will be difficult to learn this when you are already waiting for your emergency dental treatment.

If you don’t know how to meditate, don’t despair. Try to image a happy event in your life as clearly as you can. Or, imagine being at a beach or soaking in a hot bubble bath – whatever image relaxes you the most. Close your eyes if you need to. Take slow, deep, even breaths as often as you can to help your muscles relax.

The Use OF Clove Oil

Clove oil is used on many occasions as a form of pain reliever for some kinds of emergency dental treatment. It is the primary ingredient of Ambesol which is an over the counter toothache remedy. Clearly this will not be the solution for all emergencies, but this can help with most toothaches, hits to the jaw and even for abscessed teeth. It is something worth trying out to help you in your painful condition.
