We are what we eat. You have probably heard that saying before and it is completely true. If you eat lots of fatty foods, chances are you will have a high blood pressure. If you eat lots of foods and do not exercise, chances are you are overweight. It goes the same with our teeth. There are many types of foods that have a direct impact on the health of our teeth. Dental experts like Dr. Jonathan Hartley advice the public to be careful with our food choices as these can either make or break our teeth.

When we were still small kids, we were specifically warned by our adults to stay away from eating too much sweets. From candies to cookies, from sodas to shakes, anything that is sweet we were told to be very bad to our teeth. It’s also a funny thing that sweet rhymes perfectly with teeth, but that’s a completely different matter.

To properly maintain our teeth, foremost that we should do is to regularly brush them. While dentists often recommend a twice a day brushing, it is ideal to brush our teeth after every meal. So naturally, since most of us eat three times a day, we need to brush three times too.

The thing is sometimes brushing alone is not enough. We need to add flossing to our arsenal of dental hygiene. But the sad part is that flossing is not something that most of us are fond of doing. We tend to see it as too tasking and time consuming. It’s just not fun to floss. But if we want to have a really clean mouth and teeth, we need to learn how to floss.

But to achieve the best possible dental hygiene, we should add more to our regular brushing and flossing routine. This is to be extra mindful of the foods that we eat. Because anything that we put into our bodies can either keep us healthy or do the opposite. And the teeth are no exception to this. Dr. Jonathan Hartley wants people to understand that there are certain foods that we should be eating more of if what we want is a great looking set of teeth.

The following are some of the foods that we should be eating:

Meats like chicken and others, cheese, plain yogurt (stay away from those sweetened varieties), and fresh vegetables.

When adding vegetables to your diet of teeth-friendly foods, think of carrot and celery.

These are the drinks that we should be drinking more of:

Unsweetened tea, water with fluoride added, and milk. While milk is good, drinking it just when you are about to lie in bed is not a good thing. If you feel that a warm glass of milk is necessary to help you sleep, brush your teeth after you are done drinking your milk.

Sugar is virtually absent in this list of foods and drinks that we need to add to our diet if we want healthy teeth and gums. The reason is because sugar has been known to cause a lot of the common teeth problems like tooth decay.

Dental specialists like Dr. Jonathan Hartley firmly believes that there are three main steps to achieve a healthier set of teeth. One is to brush at least two times a day, two is to floss regularly and lastly, that we should be eating the right kinds of foods.
