Disadvantages of whitening Teeth – What You Require to Understand of This?

April 18, 2009

There are a number of disadvantages of whitening teeth that should be considered. Some people claim that whitening treatments can make their smile brighter in fastest and easiest way. However, before getting involved in the treatment, you need to think about the disadvantages of whitening teeth although the risk is not too overwhelming.

The Potential Disadvantages of Whitening Teeth Are Many

The truth that the chemicals that are applied can irritate the sensitive tissues of the gums and mouth is the major potential disadvantage of whitening teeth. Generally, these chemicals are either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide. In teeth whitening kits for home use, it is up to the person to be aware with the chemicals to lesson this one of the disadvantages of whitening teeth.

There is no way for the home kit user to alter the mouthguard or tray to fit his or her teeth closely enough that the chemical can’t run onto the sensitive parts of the mouth. If you have your teeth whitened by a dentist by using a specially-sized tray and mouthguard, the chances of the chemical getting onto sensitive tissues and/or gums is minimized. However, there are still risks. Thus, the mouthguard can help to lessen this particular one of the disadvantages of whitening teeth.

Any more of the disadvantages of whitening teeth is that most people experience some sensitivity of the teeth for some time after the treatment. It usually doesn’t last very long. However, for some people, the fact that their teeth will ache whenever they have something hot or cold can be an irritant.

For them, this could certainly be considered one of the disadvantages of whitening teeth. As mentioned earlier, this will go away with time, after the treatments have finished. Nevertheless, this is a definite drawback for the time that they continue to be sensitive.

The inconvenience of doing the treatment is one of the disadvantages of whitening teeth that isn’t discussed in the earlier. Whether you go to a dentist’s office for either bleaching or laser treatments, it is still a big inconvenience and maddening thing. In the contrary, you choose for home bleaching. In actual fact, it actually raised problem in your day. It’s annoy and another of the disadvantages of whitening teeth.

You Can Have Whiter Teeth Using Diy Tooth Whitening Kits

April 13, 2009

Brighter whiter teeth in only a few days? There are a lot of products and procedures available to help you improve the whiteness of your teeth.

Most of us are satisfied with the sparkle they get from brushing twice daily with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, cleaning between their teeth once a day and the regular cleanings at your dentist’s office. If you decide you would like to go beyond this to make your teeth whiter you should investigate all of your options.

We hear this question a lot:

My teeth are starting to become more yellowish each month and I’ve been meaning to get teeth whitening treatment at a dental clinic. So do you know of a diy teeth whitening product?

Is there a do-it-yourself teeth whitening product?

Yes. Teeth whitening, also known as teeth bleaching, has become extremely popular over the last several years. It’s a great way to improve your appearance, it’s reasonably priced, non-surgical and non-invasive. Until recently, you had to pay hundreds of dollars to your dentist to produce stellar results. However, those same results are now as close as the internet or your corner drugstore using a do it yourself teeth whitening product … at a fraction of the cost. Many of the “O-T-C” products sold in stores are almost as powerful as those used in the dentist’s office (and use exactly the same active ingredients). Even with this convenience, a lot of people still opt for in-office whitening, which offers convenience, speed, and precision. Most at-home kits rely on trays or stick-on strips.

There are several ways to whiten your teeth:

  • At-home teeth whitening;
  • Whitening toothpastes
  • In-office bleaching;

The Advantages Of At Home Teeth Whitening

Most at home teeth whitening kits use a form of Peroxide to bleach the teeth. The most popular formulations, including those used by most dentists, contain Carbamide Peroxide. Other types of kits, including the Crest Whitestrips, use Hydrogen Peroxide. Over-the-counter whitening systems are more convenient, much cheaper, but may not be quite as effective or long lasting as professional tooth-whitening.

If you decide to use diy tooth whitening, the idea of choosing one product over another can be daunting. There are so many kits to choose from — promising results from several weeks to only 2 hours! Search the internet and you’ll end up even more confused. Some of the kits seem very “dental” and others very down-to-earth. Some are packaged to look more upscale and are sold in spas like Bliss of New York and London. And then there are the Whitestrips. Which should you choose? That depends on your needs, your budget, and the amount of time you are willing to devote to making your teeth whiter.

As with everything else, teeth whitening isn’t perfect and it isn’t for everyone. Before you decide to have your teeth whitened, you should talk with your dentist. Your dentist can determine if you are a good candidate for teeth whitening. Knowing the facts can help you with your final decision.

Hydrogen Peroxide Teeth Whitening Explained

April 3, 2009

Hydrogen peroxide is a simple chemical compound composed of hydrogen and oxygen. This chemical is widely used as a disinfectant and a bleaching agent for fabrics and paper. More recently, however, it is being used as an ingredient to aid in the process of teeth whitening. The amount of hydrogen peroxide in the whitening compound or solution will determine how effective the process is. Most concentrations range from three to ten percent. The higher the percentage, the greater the potential effects.

How Does Hydrogen Peroxide Teeth Whitening Work Exactly?
The teeth whitening process means that the hydrogen peroxide goes through the enamel material of the teeth and bleaches the dentine and pulp portions of the tooth. Studies done by the American Dental Association indicate that this process does not damage the enamel and is safe.

What The Process Won’t Do
The teeth whitening process requires the hydrogen peroxide to go through the enamel to begin the bleaching. If it cannot go through the surface of a material, that means there will be no bleaching effect. If the hydrogen peroxide solution comes in contact with fillings, porcelain, ceramic or gold teeth or restorative work, then there is no change. On the other hand, if there is a porous material used such as cements or amalgams, the result can be one of making those materials softer and porous.

Side Effects
Like any process, there are side effects. These, however, are minor and temporary. Hydrogen peroxide strong enough to be used in the teeth whitening process can cause gums to become tender and teeth to be temperature sensitive.

What About Carbamide Peroxide?
While hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide are related, they perform two very different functions. Carbamide peroxide is formulated to work slowly, providing more teeth whitening but taking longer than hydrogen peroxide. Solutions using carbamide peroxide have a longer shelf life. Hydrogen peroxide, on the other hand, breaks down immediately upon exposure to saliva and oxygen. This means that those solutions containing hydrogen peroxide have a shorter shelf life, but perform the teeth whitening process much more quickly.

Are Your Yellow Teeth Making a Lasting Impression?

December 28, 2008

Whether it is to improve self esteem, make you look more attractive to others or simply to keep up with the Jones’s, teeth whitening is certainly all the craze today.  Movie stars have sparkling white teeth; many reality stars have them and so do virtually all television personalities (news, sportscaster’s, talk show hosts and so on).  Like those waif-looking beauties strutting down the modeling runways, these enamel glistening posers must all be seeing the dentist to the stars, or are they?  I mean who has such perfect teeth?  Hollywood stars are known for their cigarette smoking, coffee drinking and of course, frequent visits to rehab.  Don’t all of these things stain their teeth?

Sure they do, but they also sought professional dental help to restore their pearly whites to their natural shine.  These celebrities do not rely on the over-the-counter remedies we all see on TV and in the grocery store.  They get theirs done right by a professional.
We too all want glistening white teeth but many of us don’t feel like bothering with the process, are deterred by the cost or simply don’t know how to go about realizing the best results.  But one thing is for sure…beautifully white teeth will make us feel better and look better.  There is no doubt about it.

Graying or yellowing teeth are the result of damage to the pigmentation of your teeth.  With the proper treatment, you can restore your teeth to their natural shine but you must first choose the process that is best for you.

The two most effective approaches to teeth whitening are in-office laser treatment and at-home teeth whitening with custom-fit trays designed by your dentist.  Most over the counter remedies will work to some degree but will not guarantee the same level of results these professional treatments will. Over-the-counter approaches will likely lighten your teeth by three to five shades while professional treatments will improve pigmentation by 10 shades or more.

A good ballpark price range for the in-office laser teeth whitening treatment is somewhere between $400-$900 for both the top and bottom teeth.  However, in many cases, more than one treatment will be necessary for the best results and your dentist may recommend you follow up this treatment with a custom-tray at-home remedy prescribed by them.  This will obviously add more cost to your bottom line.

Putting the premium pricing aside, the biggest advantage to professional treatments is the immediacy and duration of the effect.  With the laser treatment, you will see full results as soon as the procedure is finished, and with at-home custom-fit trays, your dentist has given you professional-grade bleaching gel to keep your teeth white for a long time to come.

While teeth whitening products may or may not be something you are considering right now, some things are for sure when you do decide to take the plunge:

·    You will feel more confident
·    You will look more attractive
·    People won’t be turned off by your graying/yellowing smile any longer

The approach is much cheaper and less intrusive than other cosmetic surgeries like liposuction, face lifts and tummy tucks

There is no pain involved

It is completely safe

Assessing the Different Choices In Teeth Whitening Products

December 1, 2008

Are you worried that you may get teeth that are discolored and end up adding years to your age? People who normally have an appearance that is otherwise youthful discover that their teeth have become yellow do not match the way that they carry themselves. The use of teeth whitening products can have a dramatic effect on improving your overall appearance by making you look much younger and by resulting in younger looking teeth.

When it comes to teeth whitening you have roughly three options which are; special types of whitening toothpaste, whitening strips applied to the teeth, or lastly to have your teeth whitened where your local dentist office is located, under the watchful eye of your personal dentist.

Tooth Whitening Toothpaste

Tooth Whitening toothpaste is one of the lower cost alternatives as well as most convenient teeth whitening products that you can currently get. Numerous individuals utilize special toothpastes to whiten there smile prior to going over to more costly whitening treatments. Sadly, for most of them they end up going on to a higher degree of invasive teeth whitening products because in many instances they end up with results they are not happy with by utilzeing tooth whitening toothpaste.

This is not very surprising when you take into consideration the fact that the toothpaste only comes into contact with your teeth for a very short length of time each day, as well as the fact that any bleaching agents that are contained in the product are further diluted because of water and saliva.

Tooth Whitening Strips

What teeth whitening strips actually are is strips that are coated with a bleaching gel that a person puts onto their front six teeth on both the bottom as well as the top of their mouths. For these kinds of strips, can be highly effective treatment; for most of the people who end up using these have noted that they have very noticeably whiter looking teeth after treatment for only 2 weeks.

Nonetheless, there are various individuals who have used teeth whitening products that speak of both having gum and sensitivity of their teeth after they have used bleaching gel. You will yet find others that will note that this kind of treatment works in a way that is inconsistent that result in sections that end up discolored at the location where the strip does not completely stick to an individuals teeth.

Practically everyone that uses the tooth whitening strips have some type of complaint when it comes to this type of product as it simply whitens the front 12 teeth inside their mouth, and the majority of individuals show more than 12 teeth whenever they smile. Whitening of the front teeth can result in the untreated teeth to appear even more discolored than before the treatment.

Dentist Applied Teeth Whitening Products

You can get some of the most efficient teeth whitening prodcuts at your local dentist or sometime even with a dental hygenist. Dental professionals can prescribe whiteners which have a stronger concentration of bleach than whitening strips that are used at home. Your dentist also has the ability to make up trays that are custom so that they can hold the bleaching gel in one place against your teeth.

If you are looking for some immediate results, check with your dentist in regards to employing a special laser light which will heighten the properties of the bleaching gel. Even though these kinds of treatments may be more expensive than treatments that are over the counter, they typically last for a time that is longer in addition to having your whole moutch brightened so the end result is a bright, white smile. Always consult with a qualified medical professional before undertaking any of these procedures.

White teeth have long been a concern of aristocracy and those with careers based upon their appearance. No, you do not have to undergo the archaic teeth whitening procedures of the past because cosmetic dentists have made having whiter teeth accessible to most people. Decades ago a trip to the dentist was actually a trip to the local barber. You may have had white teeth for a little while but the long term repercussions were losing your teeth to decay. The Process of Whitening Teeth

December 1, 2008

Tooth Whitening is the process of lightening the color of your teeth. The process of whitening teeth has been found most on teeth that are mildly discolored. Wines and coffee are big stain issues for teeth as well as berries ( blueberries, blackberries ). Also if you use tobacco products they too will stain the teeth.

You can your teeth professionally bleached by the dentist or you can try some methods at home such as teeth whitening strips and toothpastes both of which have been proven to white teeth effectively. The idea of home teeth whitening eliminates any excuse as to why a person would allow ugly teeth to continue.

The degree to which the teeth whiten depends greatly on the structure of the teeth and the duration of the treatment. No one wants to have a mouth full of yellow teeth and that is why there are so many different teeth whitening options out there for us to use and pick from.

Even if you have to pay a little extra in the end, it is certainly worth it if you found teeth whitening options that finally worked wonders for you and the stains on your teeth. In some cases, a natural teeth whitening system may end up causing tooth ache or pain which defeats the enjoyable experience of cleaning up the teeth from home.

Should a person find the perfect natural teeth whitening system, pain and hassle will not be an element. The entire idea behind this is to easily and conveniently clean and brighten teeth from the comfort of home without pushing off other arrangements to go to the dentist.

Also, dental whitening gel is very easy to use, and you can find it in any general drug store or pharmacy. Although there are different brands of teeth whitening gel to choose from, they are basically all used the same way. You simply apply the gel, and then leave it on for the required amount of time.

Teeth Whitening

November 19, 2008

Everyone wants white teeth. As a Dental Hygienist, I know that people are looking at my teeth all day long. They make a judgement about how well I will take care of their teeth by how well I take care of my own. White teeth are a status symbol of someone who has it together. What does your teeth say about you?

Sometimes, no matter what we try, we can’t keep our teeth completely white and stain-free. This is partially due to genetics, some lack of dental hygiene (ie brushing, flossing, etc) and what we eat and drink. We all eat lots of processed foods containing starches and sugars, and drink coffee, teas, and sodas that leave behind stains on our teeth. Over time, these stains become worked into the enamel, so even consistent brushing won’t do the trick. This is where teeth whitening products come in. Teeth whitening is a process that removes stains and restores you smile.

Teeth whitening can be done in several ways. Many of my patients have seen results from consistent use of whitening strips that assist in removing stains caused by plaque and tartar buildup. Plaque will build up over time on your teeth, making them harder and harder to clean. The whitening process can assist in dissolving accumulations on the surface of your teeth. Strips are only one way of doing it.

Sometimes it takes more than an ordinary teeth whitening process to cleanse your teeth – sometimes it take rather strong chemicals, in this case a form of bleach. The bleaching process creates a chemical reaction with the plaque and tartar, thus loosening the bond between the buildup and your teeth. If used too much, bleach will begin to eat away and destroy your tooth enamel. The substance that coats your teeth and attempts to keep plaque and bacteria from getting inside the tooth is called your tooth enamel. Always use any bleaching product according to the directions the manufacturer has supplied, and let your local dental know what products you are using.

The best method of teeth whitening is prevention. Make sure not to drink to much coffee, tea, or sweet drink. It’s all right to have these on occasion, but many people overdo consumption of these items. This causes harmful plaque and tartar buildup on the surface of your teeth. Excess plaque and tartar will result in tooth decay and gum disease if left untreated. Use a straw whenever you can. Using a straw will help the liquid move past your teeth without coating them.

Not only are white teeth a sign of good looks, they’re much healthier than stained or yellowed teeth. Removing tartar, plaque and the associated stains will give you a healthier mouth. Tooth whitening is a good alternative when stains crop up despite consistent oral hygiene. Caring for you teeth is always cheaper than repairing your teeth. There are many teeth whitening services and systems available, but all require consistent, regular use. You can check out my site AskTheDentalHygienist for more information.

Laser Teeth Whitening

November 16, 2008

There’s something about a great smile. Especially a great smile that shows off beautiful white teeth. A bright white smile says “healthy”, and admit it, people with  beautiful white teeth somehow just look happier and more attractive. A whiter smile can make a person more confident and outgoing in social situations. Unfortunately most of us don’t have as great a smile that we could. Years of drinking dark colored beverages such as coffee, tea, soda, and red wine, smoking, and aging take their toll on the color of tooth enamel. The great news is that today anyone can have a dazzling white smile.

Teeth whitening has become the most common form of cosmetic dentistry performed over the last few years. It’s a very simple and fairly inexpensive way to greatly improve your smile. There are several ways to whiten your teeth depending on the amount of money you want to spend, and your level of patience. You can choose from tooth whitening gels and whitening toothpaste, bleaching strips, bleaching gel with a fitted mouth tray, or laser teeth whitening. Laser teeth whitening is sometimes called in-office bleaching. Of all these different types of alternatives laser teeth whitening is the fastest way to a white smile, it’s also the most expensive. A one hour teeth whitening session generally runs around $600.00.

Laser teeth whitening is considered the top of the line treatment and takes about one hour. The dentist applies a bleach solvent containing hydrogen peroxide to the teeth. You will find that hydrogen peroxide is found in all teeth whitening products. The higher the amount of hydrogen peroxide the faster the tooth whitening will take place. Once the bleach is on the teeth the teeth are subjected to a light source, usually a laser. This laser activates the hydrogen peroxide. This application is left on your teeth for twenty minutes. This process is then repeated two more times before you are done.

Of course, the results you receive from any tooth whitening system will fade over time. Trying to avoid dark colored drinks and not smoking will help you enjoy the results for a longer peroid of time.
